Questions & Concerns

Where do I get started?

The first step is already complete, seeking out help and selecting a therapist to meet.

Next step is to come in for a free 30-minute intake session to meet me, discuss what you hope to achieve, and how I might be able to support you with these goals. This is a great time to ask me questions and see if I’m a good fit for you. Fill in the form and I will respond to you as soon as possible to schedule a time to come in. I will also forward on to you instructions on how to get to the office.

Feel free to meet other professionals at this time before deciding whether I’m the best fit for you. I will also assess whether your needs can be met within my competency level. Sometimes this means referring you to another more suitable professional.

If you feel comfortable and confident with me then we will schedule your first session. This can happen at the intake or you can connect with me after at any time.

What does child counselling look like?

The intake session is done without the children present. Child and youth counselling is a whole family process. After intake I’ll have a session with just the child to start building the therapeutic relationship.

At times it may be helpful to work with both the parent and child present(s) and also to have periodic sessions with the parent(s) to ensure that the work is carried into the home. It’s a team effort and is most effective when I can have sessions with parent(s) as well.

Based on the child and family’s needs, how often family sessions or parent sessions will occur depends on the presenting challenges.

Each session is billed using the individual rate.

Will my insurance cover the costs?

Please confirm with your insurance company how many sessions or the amount that is covered before coming to therapy. It’s always a good idea to check if they cover psychologist fees.

I do not direct bill to insurance companies at this time, so you will be responsible for submitting your claim after payment.

I would also advise that before coming to see any psychologist, you should have personal insurance if you’re not receiving insurance from your employer.

How do I know if there is a progress?
How often do I have to come to therapy?

This will vary considerably from person to person. Some prefer to come every week and then ease out of therapy once a feeling of stability occurs.

I work from a client-centred perspective, so I can suggest a time amount and session time-frame but this will ultimately be up you!

Each session we review goals and progress to make sure that we continue moving forward towards the end goal of feeling empowered enough to stop therapy. You’re always welcome back though, as life will continue to change and new challenges may arise.

Insurance coverage may also determine how often and how long you are able to attend therapy.
